While it’s hard to predict when it will be safe for us to gather indoors again
(we’ll keep our eyes on CDC and Health Department guidelines),
we are maintaining cautious optimism for early 2021.
At which
time, we can’t wait to bring you these terrific shows:

At City Theatre, we pride ourselves on being cutting-edge institution who brings new plays and ideas to our stages. We pride ourselves on producing work that challenges our artists and audiencesHowever, in March 2020, we found ourselves with a new challenge. For the first time ever, every theater across the country closed its doors and had their lights go dark. During this difficult time, many of our colleagues have had to cancel performancesfor the remainder of 2020  and beyondHoweverwe couldn’t quite bring ourselves to step down from this challenge, no matter how daunting. The New York Times once hailed City Theatre as “Pittsburgh’s most innovative theater.” Well, this crisis demands innovation.

With generous support from local foundations and dedicated City Theatre patrons, we reimagined our 2020/2021 season which carried the unfortunately prescientslogan, expect the unexpected.” We are so excited to bring you a new drive-in live theater experience, world premiere holiday production written by the same team that brought you Santa’s Ted Talk, and we have our sights set on being able to re-open our big red doors to you again early in 2021.

We are so grateful that you have stuck with us through the uncertainty and we cannot wait to see all of your faces as we welcome you to Hazelwood Green, our new drive-in location. (Yes, we’re really building our own drive-in, featuring live performers on stage and projected on the big screen while you sit comfortably safe in your vehicles!).

August 17 – Subscribers
August 24 – General Public

We know that you will have questions about how this works. We’re happy to provide answers! We’ve anticipated a few, which are below, and we will continue to update these FAQs on our website. If you are a current ticket-holder, we will continue to share updates specifically for you — or, feel free to call us Monday-Friday, 10am – 2pm, at 412-431-2489.
What happens to my subscription?
We understand that our subscribers needs have changed over the past year. In order to best accommodate everyone, we have moved your subscription money on to your account for you to use as you please for any City Theatre production.
How do I use the money on my account?
When you decided to attend a performance, simply call our box office where Joel,Abigail, or one of our Box Office Associates will transfer your money into tickets. It’s a “pick your own adventure” season where YOU decide when and what to consume. Box office hours are Monday through Friday from 10am to 2pm.
Will I still have my seats when the theater reopens?
Yes! While the upcoming season is likely to make traditional seating difficult, we are guaranteeing you that your seats are not lost and you will get them back when we return to “normal operations.
Do I still have subscriber perks?
Of course! You will have exclusive access to the digital performance of F*ck7thGrade and discounted prices for the Drive-In Arts Festival. Come one night or come every night. It is your adventure to choose.Plus we are working to curate special subscriber only events – Zoom cocktails with Joel, anyone?

What if I don’t want to come back until there’s a vaccine or the theater reopens for indoor performances?
That’s fine too! Your money will roll over into next season if it’s not all used this performance year.
What about my subscriber gift?
Our box office is setting up a special pick-up day! We’ll be wearing masks, but we promise we’re smiling and excited to see you! Date to be announced soon!
I didn’t get a chance to renew my subscription this year. Will I lose my seats?
Nope! We understand that not everyone was able to renew their subscription before the theater closed in March. As a result, we are holding everyone’s seats until next renewal season. When we are able to announce the 2021-22 season, you will receive a renewal form with your same package and seats as you had in 2019-20.
What about F*ck7thGrade
Subscribers and ticket holders for F*ck7thGrade will be receiving a virtual event that will be professionally recorded at our drive-in location. The video will also be captioned. This is an exclusive offer for current ticketholders only.
