City Theatre presents the Pittsburgh premiere of Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays With Morrie, by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom. Based on Albom’s chart-topping book, this stage adaptation is directed by Alice Jankell (who last season directed City Theatre’s hit production of Bad Dates). Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays With Morrie runs on City Theatre’s 272-seat mainstage from November 17 to December 11, 2005. The play co-stars popular Pittsburgh-based actor Daniel Krell as Mitch and veteran New York-based actor Bernie Passeltiner as Morrie. Passeltiner was acclaimed for his performance of this role in Montreal and Cleveland productions.
Millions of people know sportswriter Mitch Albom from his nationally syndicated Detroit Free Press column and radio show, and as a Sunday morning panelist on ESPN Sports Reporters. In 1997 his inspirational memoir, Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson, became an international bestseller. In 2002, with popular playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, Albom adapted the book for the stage.
In this true story Mitch is 37 and a self-absorbed sportswriter. When his former Brandeis University sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, 78, is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the student and teacher re-connect. Their meeting turns into a series of weekly visits during which Morrie coaches Mitch about life, death, and the nature of love. With its doses of humor and emotional heft, the play becomes a Master Class on a life well lived.
The design team for City Theatre’s production of Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays With Morrie includes Tony Ferrieri (Scenic Design), Pei Chi Su (Costume Design), Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting Design), and Elizabeth Atkinson (Sound Design).
