It’s becoming a City Theatre tradition! A special engagement of Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold runs on City Theatre’s 272-seat mainstage from December 4–30, 2007. For the third year, Kimberly Richards will star as “Sister” on a bright and festive set by City Theatre’s Director of Production and Resident Scenic Designer Tony Ferrieri.
In this holiday hit by Late Nite Catechism creator Maripat Donovan, the “students” come to the “classroom” for a hilarious Christmas pageant, including a living nativity scene made up of audience members who join “Sister” and her Elf onstage. Before the party gets started, however, “Sister” may choose to fine late-comers and gum chewers (so have your dollar bills ready). In addition, she shares some advice about gift giving (especially to a nun), rates the razzle-dazzle of holiday sweaters, and offers special insights into Christmas lore. The mystery of who stole the gold from the Bethlehem stable is also investigated.
The hugely popular Catechism series includes Late Nite Catechism, Late Nite Catechism II: Sometimes We Feel Guilty Because We Are Guilty, and Sister’s Christmas Catechism: the Mystery of the Magi’s Gold. In all three shows the theatre becomes a catechism class taught by “Sister.” The audience members are her students, who are either disciplined or rewarded based on their behavior. Using improvisation and audience interaction, the productions are an unusual and entertaining mix of nostalgia, comedy and Catholic dogma.
Because of their overwhelming popularity, City Theatre has presented all three Catechism shows—nearly 500 performances. Kimberly Richards has played “Sister” in all but 70 of them! In her post-show plea for donations for local retired nuns, Richards has collected more than $215,000 from the Pittsburgh audience.
