City Theatre presents the joyous return of Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold, written by Maripat Donovan and starring Kimberly Richards as “Sister.” Christmas Catechism’s debut last year in City Theatre’s Lester Hamburg Studio was an immensely popular holiday hit that sold out every performance. This year it will run from November 24 through December 31, 2006 on City Theatre’s 272-seat Mainstage, where all seating is reserved. Scenic designer Tony Ferrieri will deck this hall with every conceivable type of Christmas decoration.
During this festive show Sister will quiz the “class” on Christmas lore, discuss appropriate gifts to give a nun, and create a hilarious onstage Living Nativity made up of audience members. With the help of an elf, “Sister” also solves the mystery of who stole the gold from the Bethlehem stable.
Christmas Catechism is part of the hugely popular series created by Maripat Donovan that includes Late Nite Catechism and Late Nite Catechism 2. In all three shows the theatre becomes a catechism class taught by “Sister,” and the audience members are her students, who are either disciplined or rewarded based on their behavior. Using improvisation and audience interaction, the shows are an unusual and entertaining mix of nostalgia, comedy, and Catholic dogma.
