City Theatre Presents the American Premiere of
Outlying Islands by David Greig
October 7 through October 31, 2004

Called “The most gifted of the new Scottish playwrights,” Greig packs a remote island with science, suspense, and sexual tension.

City Theatre begins its 30th season with the American premiere of Outlying Islands, written by young Scottish playwright David Greig and directed by City Theatre Artistic Director Tracy Brigden. Outlying Islands runs on City Theatre’s 272-seat mainstage from October 7 through October 31, 2004.

City Theatre’s production of Outlying Islands features Carnegie Mellon University grads Lea Coco (Robert) and Michael McMillian (John), Point Park University grad Robin Abramson (Ellen), and Peter Haig (Kirk). The design team includes Scenic Design by Tony Ferrieri, Lighting Design by Rand Ryan, Costume Design by Michael McAleer, and Sound Design by Elizabeth Atkinson.

Outlying Islands is set in 1939 on a remote Scottish island. Two young scientists, Robert and John, are sent by the government to survey the birds that live on this pristine habitat. There they encounter the island’s old leaseholder, Kirk, and his niece Ellen, who has learned about life beyond the Scottish mainland by watching the films of the day, particularly the movies of Laurel and Hardy.

As these four begin to study the wildlife and each other, a dangerous secret is revealed and a sexual competition develops. In this tense atmosphere, Greig looks at the conflict of youth against age and the battle between self-interest and the common good. Science and passion, lust and innocence, high drama and slapstick comedy all come to play in Greig’s Outlying Islands.

The newspaper Scotland on Sunday called David Greig “The most gifted of the new Scottish playwrights.” Outlying Islands won a Fringe First at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival and the 2003 Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best New Play. City Theatre’s production is the American premiere of Outlying Islands. Two other plays by Greig have been produced in the United States: The Architect and The Cosmonaut’s Last Message to the Woman He Once Loved in the Former Soviet Union.

The running time of Outlying Islands, including one 15-minute intermission, is approx. 2 hours and 20 minutes.
