City Theatre begins the 2006/07 season with the very first three-person version of The Good Body by Eve Ensler, whose phenomenally successful play The Vagina Monologues has been translated into 45 languages. Directed by City Theatre Artistic Director Tracy Brigden, this brand-new production of The Good Body, the first to feature three actresses, will run on City Theatre’s 272-seat mainstage through November 4, 2006.

The Good Body explores the cultures of beauty, food and desire through the eyes of women around the world. We meet famous women, like Cosmo editor Helen Gurley Brown and movie star Isabella Rossellini, and average women whose stories are just as fascinating. Take Bernice, a teenager who loves to go “chunky-dunking” at her fat camp. Then there’s Carmen, who couldn’t lose weight until she lost her mother. We’ll hear from Tiffany, a model whose body has been shaped by her plastic surgeon husband, and Dana, a lesbian with a thing for metal in flesh. Illuminating too is Carol, a middle-aged woman who had her vagina tightened. Also sure to startle are the insights about body image of women from Third World countries. The stories of these gutsy girls are held together by the intimate observations of the narrator, whose obsession with her waistline produces a little belly-aching and a lot of belly laughs.

Charles Isherwood of The New York Times called The Good Body “forthrightly funny” while San Francisco Chronicle theatre critic Robert Hurwitt described it as: “Passionate, funny, frank, revealing, even shocking and genuinely committed to improving life on this planet.”

Directed by Tracy Brigden, City Theatre will pioneer the first three-actress version featuring Erica Bradshaw, Laurie Klatscher, and Brigitte Viellieu-Davis. The design team includes Jeff Cowie (scenic design), Michael McAleer (costumes), Marcus Doshi (lighting design) and Elizabeth Atkinson (sound design). Patti Kelly is the production stage manager. The Good Body world-premiered at American Conservatory Theater in 2004 with Ensler performing solo. It then moved to the Booth Theatre on Broadway and a 19-city tour.

“Pittsburgh’s City Theatre is a place that pushes theatre to the edge and dares us to go to new and unfamiliar places—the perfect home for a premiere of the three-person version of The Good Body,” said Ensler.

In addition to her work as a playwright, performer, author and producer, Ensler is the founder and artistic director of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls which has spread to 81 countries and raised $35 million for grassroots groups. For more about V-Day visit www.vday.org. Her first non-fiction book, Insecure At Last: Losing It in A Security Obsessed World, will be published by Random House in October.
