Bad Dates
by Theresa Rebeck

Known for her intense scripts for TV’s Law & Order and other dramas, Rebeck shows a lighter side in this comedy about a single mother who starts dating again. Tasha Lawrence stars as a woman with choices to make about men, money, and... shoes.

City Theatre presents the Pittsburgh premiere of Theresa Rebeck’s one-woman show, Bad Dates, from February 10 to March 26, 2005, in the intimate Lester Hamburg Studio Theatre. Bad Dates is directed by Alice Jankell, who spent last spring as a guest instructor at Carnegie Mellon University.

New York-based actress Tasha Lawrence stars as Haley, a woman who’s been out of the dating scene for years, raising her daughter and managing a restaurant owned by the Romanian mob. When Haley decides to get back into circulation, she ends up questioning her choices about everything from the right outfit to the right relationship.

About this contemporary comedy the Boston Globe said: “Frothy, irresistibly charming, and bubbling over with weary good cheer.” The Seattle Times said: “Haley’s attempts to find a love connection and put together the perfect outfit with the right pumps could crack you up laughing.”

The design team for City Theatre’s production of Bad Dates includes Tony Ferrieri, scenic; Elizabeth Atkinson, sound; Matt Kopans, lighting; and Pei-Chi Su, costumes.

Tasha Lawrence’s credits include Off-Broadway and regional theatre, film, and television. TV viewers might recognize Tasha from her recurring role on the series Third Watch, and local theatre-goers might have seen her as Claire in the national tour of David Auburn’s Proof, which stopped at Downtown’s Byham Theater in 2002 as part of the Mellon Bank Broadway series.

Theresa Rebeck writes for the stage, film, and television. Her play Omnium Gatherum (co-written with Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros) was featured at the 2003 Humana Festival, ran at New York’s Variety Arts Theater, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her television credits include Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Third Watch, NYPD Blue, and L.A. Law. Selected film credits include Catwoman, Harriet the Spy, and Gossip.

Alice Jankell directs Off Broadway and at regional theatres across the country. In Pittsburgh last year she directed Lee Blessing’s Flag Day for City Theatre’s MOMENTUM: new plays at different stages and Teibele and Her Demon for Jewish Theatre of Pittsburgh. A former Associate Artistic Director at Williamstown Theatre Festival, she directed Dinah Was, As You Like It, and Enough Rope, with Elaine Stritch and Annette Helde. Alice was also a Creative Producer at Walt Disney Theatrical Productions, where she helped to create and develop new Broadway musicals.
