City Theatre presents the Pittsburgh premiere of A Picasso, a two-character drama of art and intrigue by Jeffrey Hatcher set in Paris during World War II. Directed by Stuart Carden (The Moonlight Room at City Theatre), A Picasso will run on the intimate 120-seat Lester Hamburg Studio stage from November 9–December 17, 2006.

A Picasso is set in 1941, when German troops occupy France. In a vault beneath a Paris street, a more singular conflict takes place between the Ministry of Culture’s Miss Fischer and the artist Pablo Picasso. Beautiful and pragmatic, Miss Fischer interrogates the defiant Picasso, trying to authenticate three portraits. With his work at stake, Picasso draws Miss Fischer into a negotiation marked by mutual manipulation, unexpected revelations, and a surprising final intrigue. With continual power shifts between the artist and Miss Fischer, A Picasso unfolds like a cat-and-mouse game with sly humor, sexual tension, and suspense.

City Theatre’s production features Rebecca Harris (Fiction and String of Pearls at City Theatre) as Miss Fischer and film and stage actor Mark Zeisler as Picasso. The design team includes Fred Kinney (scenic design), Angela M. Vesco (costume design), Jim French (lighting design), and Elizabeth Atkinson (sound design). A Picasso had its world premiere at Philadelphia Theatre Company and received a New York production at Manhattan Theatre Club.

Jeffrey Hatcher is one of City Theatre’s most frequently produced playwrights. Last season City Theatre presented Tuesdays With Morrie, his work with Mitch Albom. Past productions include Work Song: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright, written with Eric Simonson; the world premiere of Mercy of a Storm, and the award-winning play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, which was made into a movie. Other recent film credits include the screenplay for Casanova, directed by Lasse Hallstrom.
